About B58 charge pipes & intercoolers
The charge pipe carries boost from the turbo to the throttle body. On the B58 the factory pipe is plastic. Many owners and parts makers report that it can split under the higher boost and heat cycles of a tuned car. When it splits, the car loses boost and goes into limp mode.
An aluminum charge pipe is a reliability part. It does not add much power on its own. It removes a known weak point before you add boost. Most owners fit one at Stage 1 or Stage 2, often at the same time as the downpipe.
The main choices:
- Budget aluminum pipes (VRSF, CTS Turbo, FTP). Simple, proven, low cost.
- Mid-range pipes (Mishimoto, BMS Elite). Mishimoto offers a lifetime warranty. BMS offers versions with a blow-off valve.
- Premium kits (do88). Swedish-made with high-quality silicone couplers.
Gen 1 and Gen 2 charge pipes are not interchangeable. The throttle body flange changed on the Gen 2 (B58TU) engine. A Gen 1 pipe will not fit a 2020+ G-series car or a Supra. Some early G-chassis cars, like the G30 540i and G01 X3 M40i, use the Gen 1 engine. Check with your VIN.
A charge pipe does not need a tune. A blow-off valve setup should be paired with a tune that supports it.
On an S58 X3 M or X4 M (F97/F98), the CSF heat exchanger and transmission cooler module replaces the factory front cooler stack. More S58 parts are on the S58 parts page.
How to choose
- Good: VRSF or CTS Turbo. The lowest-cost way to replace the plastic pipe.
- Better: Mishimoto. Mishimoto says its 3 inch mandrel-bent pipe flows up to 42% more than stock, and it carries a lifetime warranty.
- Best: do88 or BMS with Turbosmart BOV. do88 for build quality. BMS plus Turbosmart if you want blow-off valve sound and boost control.
FAQ
Why upgrade the B58 charge pipe?
The factory pipe is plastic. Owners and parts makers widely report it can crack under tuned boost and heat, which drops boost and can put the car in limp mode. An aluminum pipe removes that risk.
Do I need a tune for a charge pipe?
No. A charge pipe is a direct replacement and works on a stock car. A pipe with a blow-off valve is best paired with a tune.
Will a Gen 1 charge pipe fit my Gen 2 car or Supra?
No. The Gen 2 (B58TU) engine uses a different throttle body flange. Buy the pipe that matches your engine. The Gen 2 pipes listed here fit both the G-series BMW and the A90/A91 Supra.
When should I install a charge pipe?
Before or with your first big boost increase. Most owners do it at Stage 1 or Stage 2. It is an easy job to combine with an intake or downpipe install.
